HOW TO WEAR: Shorts at Any Age

Have you been purposely avoiding wearing shorts this Summer?  Thinking that they aren’t flattering for your body shape? Or maybe no longer age appropriate?

Well you might like to read on.

Believe it or not, there are shorts styles to suit all body shapes and they are a great wardrobe staple, no matter what your age.  It’s all about feeling confident and comfortable, so finding styles which work best for your shape is key.

We’ve seen a few styles of shorts pop-up lately, even bike shorts had a bit of a moment last season.

On the runways at the recent Spring/Summer 2020 fashion shows, shorts took over and really stepped up as a versatile ‘go to’ for both work and play.  One of the most popular styles, which we are seeing already this Summer is the Bermuda short.

This is a style which sits just above the knee and is currently trending as one of the most popular shorts styles this season.  Team them with a matching blazer to create a sophisticated shorts suit look, which can easily be worn to the office or out to dinner.

Bermuda shorts also look great with a slouchy knit and flat sandals or slides for a more casual style outfit.

When working out which style of short works best for you, you will need to consider three factors:

  • Rise
  • Fabric, and
  • Length

A high rise is flattering on all body types as it hits at the narrow part of your body and helps to create balance and shape.

Mid rise sits a little lower, usually just below your belly button and is still quite flattering around your stomach area.

A low rise style is one to be more cautious of if you have larger hips or are curvy.

When considering fabrics often denim, cotton, polyester and linen are a good choice.  What you are wanting to avoid are fabrics which ride and look unflattering.

Choosing a length that you feel confident with is key.  If you are tall then opting for styles which sit just above the knee are fine.  Of course if you are on the shorter side, then aim for a mid thigh length so that you don’t look cut-off at the knee.

Shorts always look great when they are a good length and proportion.  Not too long and baggy but not too short like a hotpant.

Remember, it’s not about your age, it’s all about finding the style of short which works best for your body shape.
